Jay Clayton is best known for her very adventurous singing. On this duet set with pianist Fred Hersch, she sticks to standards, and her approach is more accessible than usual, although she still constantly takes chances. There are some unaccompanied sections where Clayton flies freely, and her introduction to "Footprints" is pretty wild. Otherwise, she concentrates more on giving meaning to the lyrics and interacting with the well-grounded (but versatile) Hersch. The result is that this CD serves as a perfect introduction to the talents of the underrated but greatly respected Jay Clayton.
