Bhangra is a variety of northwest Indian pop music that came to the U.K. with the first significant wave of Panjabi immigrants in the 1960s; over the following decades bhangra became more and more popular, to the point that it is now a club/dance phenomenon, a seamless fusion of traditional melodies and instrumentation and up-to-the-minute electronic breakbeats. Bar Bhangra offers an excellent introduction to the modern bhangra scene, with tracks by such established names as Panjabi MC, Achanak, and Sahara as well as relative newcomers like Sukhi Dhala and Amanpreet Kaur. Highlight tracks include Sahara's cool and funky "Dhol Track," the generically titled but scintillatingly jungle-flavored "Bhangra Fever" by MIDIval PunditZ, and Raghav's excellent "Teri Baaton (Your Words)," which effectively recycles the classic "Sleng Teng" rhythm. Let this fine compilation lead you to similarly exciting releases by T.J. Rehmi, the State of Bengal, and Dhol Foundation.
