The Baluch live in Pakistan as well as Iran and most of these recordings are from Pakistan, but that just proves my point: their music is an example of how the idioms of Persia radiated eastward. This unique and rarely recorded vocal and instrumental music offers a wide range of musical expression designed, through flourished repetition and focus, for healing and exaltation. Instruments include the robab lute, sorud fiddle, double-ney and banjo-like benju. Excellent recordings and notes. (I'm indebted to Farhad Bahrami for the background to this review).
