The Sweet Baby Blues Band not only expanded from an octet to a nonet by this time, but welcomed guest violinist Papa John Creach to three of the nine selections. The music is full of Jeannie Cheatham's catchy and soulful vocals, riffing ensembles and hot soloists. Four bluesy standards are joined by five Cheathams-penned originals, including "Big Bubba's Back Rub Boogie Blues," "Rock Me in Your Arms Tonight" and "Take the Wrinkles Out Your Birthday Suit." In addition to Jeannie and Creach, soloists include both Snooky Young and Clora Bryant on trumpets, bass trombonist Jimmy Cheatham, altoist Curtis Peagler, Jimmie Noone, Jr. on tenor, soprano and clarinet, and baritonist Dinky Morris; as usual, bassist Red Callender and drummer John "Ironman" Harris are quite supportive. Because Noone was ailing, Herman Riley replaces him on half of the selections. The performances bridge the gap between swing and blues, bop and early R&B. Fun and very enjoyable music.
