Originally issued in 1962, Back Home Hymns features Atkins' inimitable laid-back guitar style on a set of 12 traditional church hymns. While the selections are pleasant and would certainly provide soothing background music, they lack the charge of Atkins' up-tempo numbers like "One Man Boogie" or "Twitchy." Still, for all their six-string finesse, the hint of backwoods wildness inherent in those songs would be out of place as Atkins reverently tackles "Amazing Grace," "The Old Rugged Cross," or any of the other hymns on this album. A good companion for anyone on the way to Sunday service or a more serious aficionado, but for those not yet converted to Atkins' ways, Back Home Hymns might lack the fire to fully engage.
