Calexico's influence is quite pronounced on Amor Belhom Duo's second disc, as the relatively direct nature of Wavelab is already gone, replaced with avant-garde off-kilter strokes of mellow dissonance and far less of an ethnic feel. The transplanted Parisians seem more comfortable importing American influences into their songs, even though once again a few songs are sung in their native tongue. This eponymous disc sounds as if the duo decided to write a spaghetti Western soundtrack to accompany a film noir, mixing both of the emotive styles into a pensive admixture that is still accessible even with some unorthodox juxtapositions.
