Even with the Good Time Jazz reissue (on a large CD box set) of all of the performances by Lu Watters' highly influential Yerba Buena Jazz Band, this set of radio performances is worth investigating. The LP has two selections from 1946 and nine from 1941; the latter are particularly valuable for they find Watters' group sounding much looser than on their studio recordings. With Watters and Bob Scobey on trumpets, trombonist Turk Murphy and clarinetist Ellis Horne (Bob Helm on the 1946 titles) pushing the two-beat ensembles, the Dixielandish music (which was quite unusual for the period) is quite enjoyable. Highpoints include "Struttin' with Some Barbeque," "At the Jazz Band Ball," "Maple Leaf Rag" and two versions of "Shimme-Sha-Wabble."
