AllMusic Review by

Take the Swirlies' first album, strip away all of the atmospheric organs, effects, and electronics, and you have something like Iris' After School Special. It's a record that is, foremost, sonically interesting -- its guitars bend and weave through dreamily slanted constructions, with drifting organizations, jerky stops and starts, and sudden changes in direction dominating the song structures -- and even if the songwriting quality drops significantly on some tracks, there's enough content in Iris' approach to rock alone to keep things quite interesting.
