An alterna-folky in the '90s tradition, Utah-born, Austin-based singer/songwriter Megan Peters mixes introspective lyrics (with an occasional political tinge) with stripped-down arrangements focused almost entirely on her throaty, hoarse voice and simple acoustic guitar. The other instruments are tastefully restrained, even on full-band tunes like the rocking and lascivious "Beautiful," which almost sounds like Sheryl Crow. Peters is a mildly inconsistent songwriter, and there's definitely some filler on here, but overall, About Time is a worthwhile debut, and its best tracks, like the striking a cappella "Love Me," are excellent.
