A value-priced collection of compilations which feature the music of the '50s through the '80s, Definitive Records' A Year in Your Life series presents a fun and eclectic mix of the sounds that defined the babyhood of the baby boomers through the adulthood of the "me" generation. Ranging across a variety of pop- and R&B-influenced styles, each CD in the series highlights the music of a single year. Historical tidbits and a musical trivia quiz are also included in the liner notes. Many of the collections in this series do a pretty good job capturing the musical essence of a given year, and this volume does present a good cross section of the music of 1989, but the selections don't really hang together. Gentle songs like the Bangles' "Eternal Flame" share space with Living Colour's "Cult of Personality" and New Kids on the Block. Songs from Donny Osmond and Cyndi Lauper unfortunately don't do much to round out the mix, but Taylor Dayne and Rick Astley do help keep things fun with their stylish dance-pop songs.
