Rykodisc's Week in Hawaii series presents continuously tracked sounds of the island's lush environment, designed for ultimate relaxation. Volume five of the series, entitled Island Jungle, presents a 60-minute program mostly featuring the chirps and calls of tropical birds. However, there is a hint of the wind's gentle lull on the bottom end, and it's this effect that seems to give the recording its relaxing feel. The birds are fine, but the microphones used don't seem to have the same dynamic range as other releases in Ryko's Atmosphere collection. This can be a bit off-putting, especially when the birds begin to sound like they were recorded at the local zoo. It's probably just the effect of the mics. But for whatever reason, it's the Hawaiian wind that really stands out in this release.
