The Cleopatra label has frequently sent its roster of electro-industrial artists on tribute-album excursions, and A Gothic Industrial Tribute to the Smashing Pumpkins is part of that long line. It's exactly what you'd expect -- dark, industrial-dance remakes of Smashing Pumpkins songs, which sound fairly similar to one another. Although they're done in a vastly different style, these covers generally don't reinvent the material itself -- the original versions are either easily recalled, or not terribly relevant to the final mixes here. There's some inventive music here, to be sure, but not much that will be all that essential for most Smashing Pumpkins fans.
