20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of '80s New Wave may not quite live up to its lofty claim, but it is a very entertaining 13-song collection that rounds up some great songs. At the top of the list would have to be ABC's dramatic "Poison Arrow," the Style Council's sun-dappled and breezy "My Ever Changing Moods," and Split Enz's perky pop classic "I Got You." The rest of the tracks are mostly lush synthesized pop like Talk Talk's bouncy "It's My Life," Swing Out Sister's girl group update "Breakout," and Naked Eyes' "Always Something There to Remind Me." The disc also makes room for oddball hits like Devo's quirky "Whip It" and Animotion's corny "Obsession." Anyone who wants a quick and not very nasty look at new wave could do worse than start here. Just don't come looking for any tracks that have even a trace of punk or attitude.
