Derived from Toronto's art rock scene, the debut album from Music for Mapmakers has an obvious Radiohead quality to it, especially given the vocal bends in "Carnival." The trio of Myles Bartlett, Derek Ma, and Shayne Cox spins some early-'60s Brit rock riffs on "Down Again." There isn't much in the way of memorable numbers, although the musicianship is steady on the swaying quasi-alt-country tinges of "Princess Lia." Monterey is a brief highlight, but too often the songs seem without direction, wavering from style to style without any consistency. The only exception is a melodic, reflective piece titled "This Is Our Team," which has some ambience working for it. Equally attractive is the Floydian instrumental hidden at the album's end. On the whole, there are some good points and bad points, but the good wins out.
