A made-to-order song for the truly wacky Woody Allen film of the same name, "What's New Pussycat?" has aged surprisingly well. It's certainly not one of the songs in the Bacharach/David catalog that's easy to take seriously, yet it still has a strong charm. Basically a heavy, jazzy rock & roll waltz with some overly romantic lyrics from Hal David that border on parody, the song has an ultra-strange groove that is absolutely infectious. A true guilty pleasure in the songwriting duo's body of work. And what fun. It went Top Ten for Welsh singer Tom Jones with a smile in the summer of 1965.
