Summerlove Sensation

Song Review by

The Rollers' third U.K. hit on the trot, "Summerlove Sensation" was the British summertime smash of the year -- and with a title like that, how could it have been anything else? Penned, as usual, by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter, it was the band's most mature 45 yet in that it revolved around something more than a nonsense chorus and a simple stomping beat. With its neat retro '50s production, Beach Boys harmonies, strings, and lyrics which utterly predict the opening scenes from Grease, "Summerlove Sensation" is up there with First Class' "Beach Baby" among the quintessential summertime singles of all time and, though it ultimately faltered at number three on the U.K. chart, you'd never have guessed that at the time.
