Brought to the band by producer David Kahne, this near-Middle Eastern pop confection is -- for better or worse -- probably the Bangles' best-known recording. Frankly, if you listen to the record, it has very little to do with the band's overall persona. A colorful portrait of the confusing 1980s pop culture landscape, its hook-laden verses and instrumental arrangement are certainly catchy, and there was no doubt that this was recorded as a single; it certainly succeeded, going Top Ten for a lengthy run in 1985. In hindsight, however, the song has aged very poorly, and it now sounds like a freak hit or novelty record, which, in fact, is precisely what it is. Friends, this is Spinal Tap.
