Deep Purple

Composed by Ritchie Blackmore / Ian Gillan / Roger Glover / Jon Lord / Ian Paice

Song Review by

The title track of Deep Purple's fifth album (but their first to be recorded from a position of superstardom - In Rock was less than a year old at the time), "Fireball" was one of the last numbers to be recorded, a supersonic rocker whose so-distinctive opening moments, a roar that could indeed be a passing fireball, was as distinctive an intro as the clatter of "Speed King", last time around. Neither did the band itself allow the fission to evaporate - "Fireball" remains one of Deep Purple's most instantly exciting numbers, lyrics and instruments all but tripping over one another in their haste to get out. (How disappointing it was, years later, to discover that, far from pointing a microphone at the mysteries of the heavens, engineer Martin Birch simply recorded the studio air conditioning clicking on.)

Released as a single, the follow-up to "Strange Kind Of Woman", ”Fireball”’s final UK chart placing of #15 was disappointing; the album, however, topped the listings and, though the band members themselves have since dismissed much of Fireball as an experiment that didn't quite come off, "Fireball" itself remains one of their best-loved numbers.
