Come On Come On

Song Review by

Of the seven hit singles to come from Mary-Chapin Carpenter’s breakthrough 1992 album Come On Come On, the title track wasn’t one of them, nor did this lethargic live version do much to improve the public’s opinion of the song. Missing the haunting lyricism of the studio original, this slow-moving, deliberately paced mood piece isn’t the sort of number that creates much dynamic energy when performed live. Perhaps the song works better in person within the flow of a well-planned musical set, but culled from its context it’s a curiously inert effort, and little match when compared with the groundbreaking original.
