The Motors

Airport

Song Review by

The Motors' biggest hit and the song for which they're most remembered -- their mid-'90s career retrospective CD was named for it -- "Airport" is a spooky slice of new wave-influenced power pop, complete with a haunting synth melody and a dreamily foreboding chorus. The lyrics cover a topic familiar to anyone in a long-distance relationship, that feeling of melancholy that washes over anyone who has to say goodbye to a loved one in the strangely emotion-free confines of an airport. Singer/songwriter Andy McMaster sets the lyrics to a suitably mopey melody, and the arrangement features some nicely 10cc-like Big Pop touches, like the half-spoken delivery of the title line by the backing vocalists in the choruses. Although The Motors somewhat halfheartedly put on a trendy new wave persona, "Airport" is a classic old-school pop single unencumbered by such trend-hopping.
