Chicago-based James could sing blues to good effect - he issued a fine 78 on Vocalion Records - but the bulk of his recording was done as a studio guitarist for Bluebird Records during the 30s. James’ light, swinging guitar was reminiscent of ‘Big’ Bill Broonzy, but he was equally at home backing relatively unemotional northern singers such as Bumble Bee Slim, Merline Johnson and Curtis Jones, as well as duetting with Tennessee guitarist John Henry Barbee or the pianist Frank James, and as a member of Tampa Red’s pop-inflected Chicago Five.
