Weedfreak came together when several young musicians met while living in Tokyo in the mid-'90s. Guitarist Hideki Takahata, bassist/vocalist Mike Gulvin (originally from London), and guitarist/vocalist Vincent Nikopol (from New York) started out as an acoustic trio called the Grapefruit Heads, playing coffeehouse gigs and at the city's Matsuri festival. The band grew into a quintet with the addition of guitarist Chris "Crocodile" Grundy and drummer Ichinosuke Tabuchi, playing anywhere from area clubs to the subways. December 1997 brought the release of Methadone, the band's first album as Weedfreak.
