Artist Biography by

Originally an offshoot of the 50s Ghanaian orchestra, the Broadway Dance Band, the Uhurus were led by Stan Plange, who took over the featured guitarist role in 1965. They soon rose to become one of the country’s most popular dance bands, mixing imported western music whilst also borrowing from their own ethnic traditions. During the mid-70s they renamed themselves the Great Uhurus and played regularly at Faisal Helwani’s Saturday Night Shows at the Apollo Club. By this time they had recorded their debut album for Decca West Africa, though they only achieved international recognition in 1991 with a compilation for USA label Original Music, which in itself drew heavily from their debut.
