A dark turtleneck riff on Piano Magic's flea-market techno sonatas, the Tone Manipulators' brand of cautiously crafted IDM dub scored big with fans hungry for dancehall music interpreted by Germans. DJ Reverend and the frequently pseudonymous Cem Oral (Jammin' Unit, Air Liquide, Zulutronic) had built their pan-Atlantic sound from a base of numerous dub-integrated projects, appearing on Elektrolux's first Dub Backups compilation in 1997 alongside Bandulu and Dr. Scissors and Universal's Smoking Beats, as well as releasing the "Totally Illegal" EP and 1999's dark, spangly "Dubstructure" single.
