This cult AOR band was formed in New York, USA, in 1988 by vocalist/guitarist Steve Augeri (b. 30 January 1959, Brooklyn, New York, USA). The Tall Stories line-up settled with the addition of lead guitarist Jack Morer and the experienced rhythm section of Tom DeFaria (drums) and Kevin Totoian (bass). The latter had replaced Anthony Esposito (bass), who would join Lynch Mob, while numerous early drummers included the Damn Yankees’ Michael Cartellone. The band’s abilities developed as they played the clubs around the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, and they were signed by Epic Records. The Frank Fillipetti-produced Tall Stories was universally hailed as an AOR classic, with an artful guitar-based delivery reminiscent of Tyketto. Augeri’s vocals evoked Journey’s Steve Perry and Strangeways’ Terry Brock in addition to Tyketto’s Danny Vaughn. However, like many good 90s AOR albums, Tall Stories remains an undiscovered gem. Augeri departed to join Tyketto in 1995, but three years later replaced Perry in Journey.
