b. USA, d. USA. Leading early country music bands, Thompson also formed a family band with his wife and children, gradually adding others until he had a western swing band that sometimes called upon as many as 17 musicians. During his career, Thompson hosted a television show, Shorty, Sue & Sally. An album of Shorty, Sue And Sally’s 40s radio transcriptions, Saddle Rockin’ Rhythm, was issued on Cattle Records in 1991. Among his children in one of his bands was future songwriter Wayne Carson Thompson, whose compositions include the Boxtops’ ‘The Letter’, ‘Soul Deep’ and, best known ‘Always On My Mind’, which was written in collaboration with Johnny Christopher and Mark James. Chet Atkins was at one time a Thompson sideman.
