The folk songs and dances of Slovakia are preserved through the performances of Detroit, MI-based Sarisan. Formed by Milan Straka, shortly after he emigrated to the United States in 1968, the group features a singing group, a 12-piece orchestra, and an eight to ten couple dancing troupe. In addition to performing throughout the United States, Sarisan has performed five times in Slovakia, including three appearances at the folk festival in Detva. In 1991, the ensemble toured around the former Czecho-Slavakia. A native of Velky Saris, a small village near the district town of Presov in eastern Slovakia, Straka formed a similar troupe in his hometown in 1967. In addition to leading Sarisan, Straka continues to run his own engineering firm. His dancing partner and wife, Eleanora Rimarcikova, was born in the United States to parents who had emigrated from east Slavokia.
