b. USA. As well as his work as a gospel singer, Ragan Courtney is also a renowned poet and playwright. The mediums he has worked in outside of music include books, radio and stage production. Married to gospel vocalist Cynthia Clawson, for whom he has written many songs, he has also collaborated widely with composer Buryl Red. With Red he wrote the musical drama Hello World, Celebrate Life and the ‘praise concert’, Beginnings. When Red himself wrote a piece called Acts, commissioned for and premiered at the Texas Baptist Convention of 1978, Courtney served as his musical director. In 1971 he narrated the CBS Christmas Special, then wrote a musical, Bright New Wings, ‘dealing with life’s transformation that comes through Christ’ with wife Clawson. His other work includes Angels, a children’s musical employing puppets to animate his Christian concepts. Despite his multifarious activities, fans of gospel music know him best through the literate, intelligent religious advocacy of the Triangle albums which have accompanied these productions.
