Naka (born Ramiro Gomes Dias) is one of the few performers from Guinea-Bissau to achieve a measure of international fame. A singer and guitarist, Naka formed his first band N'Kassa Cobra in the early '70s and performed covers of African pop songs. After a stint in Lisbon, he settled in Paris, where he established himself as a solo performer. His sound is based on the ceremonial rhythm of Guinea-Bissau known as gumbe, although he plays in a variety of styles ranging from rock to roots. An exuberant performer, he has more recently moved toward expanding his instrumental repertoire. He can be heard on Salvador.
