Formed by sisters Venessia (b. 28 July 1988) and Fazenda Young (b. 1992), this group is indirectly a product of the esteemed Delta Blues Education Fund, founded in 1992 and based in Clarksdale, Mississippi. This organization’s mission statement declares its primary objective is ‘to bring together the children and master musicians of the Mississippi Delta for the continuation of the Delta Blues tradition’. In the case of the Young sisters, the result has been exemplary. Venessia started out playing bass and keyboards but was encouraged by her teacher to concentrate on guitar. Fazenda started on clarinet in a school band but switched to bass. Both sisters also sing. Their teacher is Michael James, of Clarksdale’s Delta Blues Museum. Backed by a drummer, sometimes Lee Williams (b. 1988), other times Jeremy Horton, they have played extensively in and around their Clarksdale base and have also performed in Nashville, Tennessee, and also in Washington DC. A visit to Norway spread the word on these remarkable young musicians. Obviously, the sisters were introduced to the blues at a very early age, encouraged by their mother, Katherine Young, and local people such as Jessie Mae Hemphill.
