I was born in Denver in 1968. I have lived most of my life in the Denver metro/Boulder corridor. My early love of music was shaped by my parents small, but varied record collection. They had a little of everything. The things I remember most, and still listen to were the Beatles, Brazil 66, Dave Brubeck, and my fathers knowledge of Mozart. I was also forced to endure my mother's love of folk, which has scarred me for life. Most of my early life was spent listening to Denver's oldies station, KRZN 1150 AM. It was there I found my love of the British invasion. But in 1978, we got cable. Late nights on this wonder was a show called Night Flight, with the greatest broadcast voice I have ever heard, Pat Prescott. It was on Night Flight that I first saw a video for a band in what was being called the 'new wave.' That band was the (English) Beat. With that discovery, the new ska revival was laid open. It's been 'my music' ever since. Also in the early 80's I saw the film Quadrophenia for the first time. Cliche now, it introduced me to the Mod style that went hand in hand with ska. I may still be the only 9th grader to willingly wear a suit to school. I also became quite taken by the several other 'new wave' sound especially the synth driven pop. Although I recognize the real lack of substance in many of those bands (Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls) I always defend them, as being just good entertainment. Still are. So there I am, stuck in the 80's in everything but ska, and the 60's sounds I still enjoy. Pathetic, really.
