My name is Nic Kirshnit and I am a new essayist for the AMG classical department. I am 19 years old and have just completed my sophomore year at Manhattan School of Music, where I major in French horn. I attended the Laguardia High School for the Performing Arts in New York City and also graduated from the Juilliard School pre-college program. I was principal horn in the Juilliard pre-college symphony for two years and the pre-college orchestra for two years. I played the Brahms Horn Trio in recital at Juilliard and was in many chamber groups as well. At Manhattan, I have performed with the Symphony for two years and was in the orchestra for the opera Rappacini's Daughter by Catan. I attended the Luzerne Music Center for five years and was principal horn in both band and orchestra. I was also principal of the Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble and the Hartt Concert Orchestra of Hartford. I studied with Robert Routch and now study with David Jolley. I played a series of concerts in England with the Glastonbury High School concert band. I also play electronic horn with a rock group. I love the outdoors and climbed Mt. Rainier last summer. At Manhattan I have studied theory and music history and have a deep interest in many types of music. I have also won awards for creative writing and poetry. At the present time I am at a crossroads and must decide whether to pursue music or forestry as my life's career. I am enrolled at Queens College this summer to study biology in preparation for a possible scientific change of major. My father writes for the guide as well.
