Originating in Mozambique, this group’s first public appearance came in 1994. Much of their music originated in the country’s northern regions, an area severely damaged by internal strife. Led by Feliciano Dos Santos, Massukos directs much of its work to raising awareness of third world problems. These relate to hygiene, sanitation, health, notably HIV/AIDS, and especially water supplies. Their 2002 debut album went gold and they began attracting attention outside their homeland. In 2004 Massukos performed in Japan at the Third World Water Forum and they visited the UK the following year where they appeared at the Make Poverty History Rally in Edinburgh and at the British Museum in London for the BBC’s Africa Live. A return trip to the UK in 2007 saw more live appearances, including WOMAD, as well as radio broadcasts as they promoted Bumping.
