b. 13 June 1905, Burnsville, North Carolina, USA, d. 13 July 1980, USA. Playing guitar and singing traditional music that ranged through the blues to early country, Riddles became a friend and musical companion of A.P. Carter, patriarch of the Carter Family. With Carter, he travelled through many states, especially in the Midwest, gathering songs. To Riddles fell the unenviable task of learning the songs that they heard so that Carter, who noted the words, could later reproduce them for his family band. Riddles also had a stylistic influence on Maybelle Carter's guitar playing.
