Not too long after the breakup of the New Cuba, vocalist/guitarist Ben Dickey moved on to front his own solo project in 1999 under the moniker of Kapsize. By taking up bass, keyboards, a four track machine, and a new lineup for practically every live show within his native of Austin, TX, Dickey recorded his first album, The Gift, that was eventually released through Post-Parlo Records in 1999. The following year, after solidifying Kapsize's lineup with Dave Morgan (bass) and Kevin Bybee (drums), Post-Parlo put out their follow-up album, The Captain's Recordings.
