Kandel's Orchestra was one of the many Klezmer bands to emerge in America in the first decades of the 20th century as Eastern European Jews began to flood into the States to escape persecution. Klezmer music was based on violin, clarinet, trombones, tubas, and trumpets, and captured a plaintive, Old World sound. Led by Harry Kandel, the eponymous Orchestra signed to Victor in 1917 and became one of the most popular Jewish bands in America.
