Were he to choose which people named John Simmons the prolific bassist of the same name would most like to be confused with, the John Simmons who was recorded by musicologist Alan Lomax in the '30s would be at the bottom of the list. That's because that particular Simmons, who leads a superb performance of "Ezekial and the Dry Bones," was a member of a manual labor crew which created a state highway out of a South Carolina swamp. The big boss man for these workers was Mike Maybank: his performances are also featured on the Rounder CD entitled Deep River of Song: South Carolina - Got the Keys to the Kingdom.
