Originally recorded by Bessie Smith in 1930, the classic blues song entitled "Hustlin' Dan" is sometimes credited to a James Crawford, more commonly the mysterious "J. Crawford." Like much material from this genre, the song was adopted from folk song sources in the public domain. This is not James "Sugarboy" Crawford, the R&B songwriter from New Orleans whose career began in the '50s.
