Canadian indie rock outfit Heat were formed in Montreal by singer/guitarist Susil Sharma. A longtime sideman in various Montreal indie bands, Sharma eventually recorded a set of his own noisy, melodic demos, around which Heat formed in late 2013. The founding trio of Sharma, Matthew Fiorentino, and Raphaël Bussières issued the band's debut EP, Rooms, in 2015, garnering critical acclaim and comparisons to acts like the Jesus and Mary Chain, Echo & the Bunnymen, and Pavement. A deal was struck with American label Topshelf Records, and Heat headed into the studio with co-producer Alex Newport (At the Drive-In, Death Cab for Cutie) to record their first album. Released in early 2017, Overnight was heavy on melody and hooks, but with brash, shadowy undertones.
