Originally under the name X-Band when they first got together in 1986, Gruel was born upon guitarist Tommy Hamilton taking over the mic. Accompanied by bassist Chris Gleasman and drummer Bruce Hamilton, the band brought on their own style of mood swing power-pop to their own Tallahassee, Florida. With their 1987 recording debut being a split album with French death metal heads Phobia, Gruel's first full-length Something in my Room followed in 1988. Their second album Out of Mind came out with a little help from Manufacture Records in 1991. Unfortunately, Gruel disbanded not too long after the Screw EP which was released the next year.
