Following a period as the DJ for Top 20 pop/rock group the Dust Junkys, Ganiyu embarked on a solo career and became the first artist released by the Manchester/London label Key Recordings. Born in Manchester to parents of English, Irish, Nigerian, and black American descent, Ganiyu -- whose Nigerian name means "self-sufficient" -- took his love of music from his mother. Besides his multi-cultural upbringing, he broadened his horizons further after living in Holland for several years during his adolescence. He returned to Manchester at age 14 and became increasingly serious about music. He joined the Dust Junkys as their DJ and enjoyed the glory of success before the short-lived group disbanded. At this point, Ganiyu, who had quietly been songwriting for several years, began his solo career. Key Recordings released his debut single, "Special," in 2002.
