The soukous music of Zaire (Democratic Republic of the Congo) has been updated to create the "rumba funk" by Paris-based vocalist Emeneya Kester. While rooted in the musical traditions of Africa, Kester has increasingly incorporated European influences and instrumentation. The result is a global sound that Kester claims to aim towards "the new generation for the interplanetary conquest of musical space." After building his reputation in his homeland during the late '70s and early '80s, Emeneya relocated to Paris.
