Down River Nation, who comprise Shaun Atkins (vocals), Gizz Butt (guitar), Shop (bass) and Pinch (drums), were formed in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1994. Although they were welcomed in the pages of heavy metal magazines, there was more than a hint of third-generation UK punk rock in their fiery songwriting. This was perhaps unsurprising, as two band members had formerly been in English Dogs, who specialized in a similar brand of molten thrash. However, Down River Nation added a surly brand of funk and dance rhythms, clearly influenced by Urban Dance Squad. Atkins’ vocals were also compared to those of Layne Staley of Alice In Chains. The group made their debut in 1995 with a seven-track demo, Subworld Disciples, before setting out on tour with Blaggers ITA.
