One of the earliest US hip-hop DJs, enjoying a residency at the 371 club in the late 70s and taking Grandmaster Flash under his wing, he also introduced Afrika Bambaataa by allowing him to play on his system. The latter adapted his ‘switch’ mechanism for changing channels on the decks to great effect, to all intents and purposes inventing ‘scratch’ DJing in the process.
