Inspired by the post-hardcore sounds of Washington, D.C.-based bands, including Jawbox, Hoover, Kerosene 454, and Fugazi, three ex-members of Columbus, OH-based band Special Aviation Project joined together to form DeNovo. The group, which initially featured guitarist Marc Anderson, bassist Chris Worth, and drummer Jason Mowery, reinforced its power-driven sound with the addition of guitarist/vocalist Sean Richard Gardner, who continues to also perform with Kopaz, in late-2000.

Having spent more than a year developing their sound and building their repertoire, DeNovo began working on a demo in February 2002. The band's first single was released in April 2003.
