One of the earliest recordings ever made of jazz drumming -- that is, percussion that swings with a syncopated beat -- featured this Charlie Johnson, not to be confused with many other musicians of the same name. The drummer was a member of the Versatile Four, an American vaudeville group whose 1916 recording of "Down Home Rag" was cut in London, England.
