An elegiac tribute to painter L.S. Lowry penned by Michael Coleman so impressed his producer Kevin Parrott that the two briefly recorded as a duo. ‘Matchstalk Men And Matchstalk Cats And Dogs’ was a surprise UK number 1 in 1978, but Brian And Michael were unable to exploit its success with a follow-up hit. Coincidentally, the vocal backing on the disc was provided by the St. Winifred’s School Choir who would later enjoy a UK number 1 of their own in 1980 with ‘There’s No-One Quite Like Grandma’. After splitting with ‘Brian’, Coleman continued his writing career, penning Ken Dodd’s 1981 hit, ‘Hold My Hand’.
