With indie rock and pop wisdom far exceeding their age, and an energetic live show featuring adventurous arrangements, N.Y.C. band Blame the Patient began to make a name for itself in the late-'00s, its five members all still in high school. Singer Sofia Kapur's elegantly confident vocals -- halfway between Natalie Merchant and the Sundays -- are backed by the intricate, alternately jagged and breezy backdrops set by her brother Anders on bass, Hunter Lombard, Andrew Leopold on guitar, and Annelise Stabenau on drums. By 2009, the act had earned the respect of veteran peers, opening up for acts like Shudder to Think.
