Beyond Religion was both group and record label, and was headed by joint-songwriters Karen Mercer (vocals) and Pete Spence (instrumentalist), based in Enfield, London, England. The group made their debut with the Two Worlds EP in 1993, which comprised four tracks of synthesized dub and ambient house. The group, previously known as Chromatic, was formed following problems with that outfit’s attempts to secure a major label record contract. Beyond Religion staked their claim (and an Enterprise Allowance grant) with songs that were generally fully formed compositions rather than merely rhythmic tracks. Subsequent releases included ‘Planet Of Our Own’ (a promotional only release), ‘Magic’, ‘Rescue Me’ (remixed by Marc Wilkinson from Flying Records) and ‘Bring On The Goodtimes’.
