Although the antics of Barbara Nice as middle aged housewife and ‘agony aunt' are well known throughout England, Barbara was simply a character that was created by comedian, actor, and performer, Janice Connolly. Spotted in the Barbara Nice guise by Peter Kay in 1998 at the Manchester Evening News New Act of the Year competition, Connolly went on to appear in a number of well-known British television programs, including Coronation Street, That Peter Kay Thing, and Phoenix Nights. The founder of her own dramatic company -- the progressively minded, advocates of the under-represented -- Birmingham based Women & Theater. While her work in other aspects of drama and theater were well received, it was for her Barbara Nice character that Connolly found the most fame, and took the character on the road on a consistent basis. The character was meant for the live arena, interacting heavily with the audience.
